Flexible seating is becoming more popular in today's classrooms. This is because it benefits students in countless ways. Students, given the option of flexible seating, are indirectly learning choice, problem solving, turn taking, patience, collaboration and community. It is not just about comfort, although being comfortable aids in the students' engagement during class. Desks and rigid work stations tend to create environments with territorial children. Flexible seating encourages children to share space and supplies! Children need to move and flexible seating allows them to have that opportunity. Physical activity is linked to a higher academic performance. Allowing children to navigate to a new area in the classroom gives them the break they may need to recharge and effectively learn. I am hoping to incorporate a couple flexible seating options into my classroom for our independent reading period. My goal is to help students improve their engagement and motivation during this time. I am confident flexible seating will assist in this and the students will flourish in this type of environment.
