Character education is a big part of our school. We focus on one character trait each month of the school year and reward one student from each class as "Student of the Month" for being the best at showing that trait for the month. Our character traits include pride, responsibility, respect, self-control, cooperation, honesty, integrity, courage, compassion, and perseverance. Through the use of the book "Out of My Mind" by Sharon Draper, my class will participate in a book study to learn about empathy and accepting other's differences. This book study will include learning literacy standards in the classroom as well as learning more character education with our school counselor who will be working with us on this book study. The fifth graders in my school have done a similar cross-curricular book study with the book "Wonder" and it went so well that we have decided to try it in 4th grade with this book that we think students will enjoy and learn a lot from.
