The students in a developmental preschool classroom present with a variety of abilities, skills, and diagnoses. Our students have varying cognitive, adaptive, and social abilities and needs. Our current classroom rug is brightly colored which is great, but the alphabet print on the rug can be distracting for a number of our students, especially those who tend to focus and self-stimulate on naming the letters or repeating the alphabet. This tendency to focus on the letters can inhibit our kiddos' ability to attend to the lesson, affecting their participation and success during our whole group lesson. A rug with shapes and colors, rather than letters, would solve this issue, making sure that all our students are able to sit on the rug without distractions and focus on the lesson to better participate and develop skills and behaviors we practice daily. This rug would also create the opportunity for students to practice color and shape identification and direction following skills, as each day a student would be assigned to a certain shape, which they would then have to find and sit on. The current classroom rug is not developmentally appropriate for each and every one of our preschoolers, as it affects the ability of some of our friends to focus on the whole group activity. As we are a developmental preschool, we focus on inclusivity and equity for all. A new rug would give all our students, even those with the highest of needs and support, an equal opportunity to succeed and participate during our large group lessons. The large size of the rug also allows students enough space to have their own "bubble" and practice safe body behaviors. A new rug would enhance the welcoming and inclusive environment we aim for in our preschool classroom.
