My students struggle every single day to remain focused on learning math. Some of them are so far behind that they feel defeated and immediately ready to give up as soon as they hear me say "math problems." The thought of practicing math skills is daunting to students who feel like they are "bad" in math. In my class, we say that no one is "bad" at math, they just need more practice - so why not make practice a little less intimidating and a little more engaging? We use interactive activities on our Chromebooks as well as paper and pencil activities from time to time. Adding a simple thing like a white board and a colored dry erase marker of their choice to help them work out their problems makes the biggest difference. We have plenty of whiteboards in our classroom, but we continuously run out of markers. Some of my students struggle with motor function, which causes us to go through them extremely quickly. This project will help my students feel a little less intimidated by math and allow them to have simple options that make a huge difference in how they view themselves as mathematicians.
