Fifth grade is a turning point in many young peoples' lives. Even though I teach at the same elementary school I attended, my students are facing infinitely more challenges than I had to when I was their age. They are faced with becoming literate in an ever-changing world, both in and out of school. The digital age has brought exciting prospects and unique challenges. At our school, they are the oldest students, and are often tasked with being leaders for their peers and younger grades. Many of my students come from families where one or both heads of household are out of work and struggling to make ends meet. They wear stress on their faces, and do not always have the proper social skills to express their feelings. Many students have experienced trauma and are still processing. They do best when they are able to experience their learning; creating their own theories and testing out different strategies in the real world.
