It is my goal as a teacher to strengthen my student's sensitivity, appreciation for diversity, and respect for one another. The novel, "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio is a story about a boy who is different. I hope to engage my students in the wonderful story and be able to facilitate rich conversations with my students about diversity and to recognize that beauty is from within. By having the book in their hands and taking turns reading it and discussing it, I hope to inspire them to think of all humans as valuable and to recognize their own unique talents. One of the most important actions I must take as a teacher is to help my students have a strong sense of empathy towards others. "Wonder" will allow my students to see themselves in the main character and reflect on the way they would like to be treated and the way they must treat others. As teachers we must find unique ways to embed life lessons while increasing our student's reading ability and interest. This project will allow me to succeed in both.
