Many of my students have challenging home lives, have suffered trauma and some are even homeless. A warm inviting room where kids can relax and be kids is key to helping these newcomers feel safe and loved enough to be ready to learn a new language. Though I teach Middle School aged students, some of our kids are entering school for the very first time. Much of the work we will be doing will center around school culture and norms, cultural mores and expectations and friendship and community building. It is therefore my goal to make my classroom into a place which inspires peace, joy and homelike security. This world map rug will be a focal point in our classroom, prompting kids to share their heritage, thereby building their sense of local community, while honoring their international identity.
