I chose books that would be interesting for my students to read. Books about hip-hop artists and scientists and strong independent teen characters. I chose to create a classroom set of the book the Hate U Give in order to incorporate more literature into my classroom that has more diverse protagonists and can relate to events occurring the outside of the classroom. We are from a rural area in WV and for a lot of my students books and literature are their only peek into the outside world. I want my students to have that look. I want my students to see what else is out there and how the world can be changed. I included a book on 33 Female inventors to show my girls they have options. I added the biographies on hip hop artists so they could see the struggle and climbing that they have had to get where they are. You can't have books without a place to put them so the bookshelves are an added necessity.
