Our school is part of a small neighborhood surrounded by industrial parks. Many of our students are first generation Americans, from 10 plus countries, and our school library is their first exposure to borrowing books. Many are first learning to read English. We would like to offer a range of reading materials that appeal across the range of readers. Enjoying a good scary story holds universal appeal to many. “Do we have any Goosebumps books?” is the first question I hear from my students as they search the shelves for books to check out. Often the one or two we have are dog-eared, taped up, pages falling out. Goosebumps are good for near and proficient 3-5 grade readers. We have also requested some scary reads for developing readers as well. Scary stories are a big draw at any reading level.
