The rug I have requested will first serve to brighten the space in our art portable building. It will make our space feel more welcoming and homey. A bright space instantly welcomes the students in without saying a word. This rug will also allow me a space to introduce new art lessons to my young artist through amazing literature. Younger students receive a less structured place to sit and it encourages a smooth transition to their art tables where they start their lesson. This was very beneficial during my kindergarten teaching and I have found it has carried over to my art room. I tested this theory out when we were able to temporarily borrow a class rug during the year. The transition from rug to table allowed them to be less "stuck" in one place, especially at this young age where transitions are so important.
