Many of my students struggle with reading due to inadequate past instruction or because they are currently learning English. Because of this, we are focused on working with math in word problems and in the context of real-world situations. For instance, my financial algebra students are working on a budget project in which they manage, invest, and spend percentages of the monthly starting salary of their desired careers. A set of dictionaries will make classroom learning materials more accessible to my emerging bilingual students, who find themselves simultaneously learning math and English in my classroom. I hope that the dictionaries will foster more effective communication among students regardless of their English comprehension levels. We are working toward a classroom in which students learn from one another's ideas and from exploration. By breaking language barriers among students who are already so willing to help peers who speak different languages than they do, dictionaries would allow my students to more effectively communicate with one another toward this end.
