My students are very excited about Science this year. So far (most of them) have not had a meaningful experience in previous Science classes. Many of them have asked me if we are going to have activities or just book work, worksheets, videos, and quizzes. I have identified that the vast majority of my students (I have a total of 216) showed special interest in Science. They have the notion that Science should be fun, and a big part of the fun is "doing stuff". My school counts with a highly diverse population. You may encounter kids who have never been out of our small town of Casa Grande in AZ, or kids who have been (repeatedly) to Disney World in FL. A lot of our students have not had first hand experience with Science equipment or materials. So increasing the amount of hands-on activities has become my personal goal for this year.
