Our school is a large high-school in an established community that draws from one of the most economically challenged neighborhoods in the city. Many of the students attending our school contend with hunger, violence and gangs on a daily basis. My students are highly motivated learners from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. The Freshmen are, for the most part, at-risk students who have been under-achieving in their middle school experiences. The Sophomore classes are in their second year of high school and struggling to make school relevant to their home lives. Most of my students come from lower socio-economic situations where access to computers and technology is limited. They all enjoy English and are excited about the multitude of projects and options I use to make learning exciting - oral presentations, dramatic work, video summaries and multimedia slideshows - but as we lack the technology to present these in the classroom, enthusiasm is waning.
