In the past, I have taught excerpts of The Things They Carried, and I witnessed a diverse array of students enthralled with the portions of the text they experienced. Many of my students have not had the opportunity to travel very far from their homes, and O’Brien places his readers into a global context and a critical moment in our Nation's history. O'Brien's ability to grab the attention of the most apathetic student is uncanny; his experimental prose lends itself to exciting discussions on the narrative form, and his subject matter cuts deeply in a way that begs for “big-picture” questions and rich teaching moments. The novel focuses on the individual experiences of several soldiers during the Vietnam War; these soldiers are as diverse as my students, and many will see bits of themselves in these characters as we read. Additionally, several of my students are either interested in joining the military or have loved ones who are in the military, so I feel this novel will speak directly to them. “For the common soldier, at least, war has the feel—the spiritual texture—of a great ghostly fog, thick and permanent. There is no clarity… Right spills over into wrong. Order blends into chaos, love into hate, ugliness into beauty, law into anarchy.” -- Tim O'Brien, The Things They Carried
