The moment my classroom door opened on Back to School Night, I had many students rush the library shelves, sit down at the nearest table, and sat quietly as I met their parents. As school has started, students have began practicing reading to themselves but I keep getting the same complaint, "I can't read yet!" It is quite evident that my first graders are eager to become emergent and fluent readers. I want to foster a love for reading in our classroom which means providing my students with a variety of genres and levels of text. I am asking for a variety of fiction and non-fiction books including Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History and Splat the Cat: Big Reading Collection. Also, because I have a bunch of animal lovers in my classroom this year and I know they would love to put a bunch of the National Geographic: Kids readers about animals in their book bags. My students have already built great relationships with many literary characters like Biscuit and Splat the Cat. During read to self or read to partner, my students would be able to pick up these readers and continue that love all while reading words they know and understand. I cannot wait to see their faces light up when they find new and familiar faces and topics in their classroom library.
