I am a teacher at an urban, Title I middle school. My students are mainly from minority backgrounds, and over 90% receive free and reduced-price meals. I teach conflict resolution, empathy, and individual responsibility to students as deliberately as I teach them science. I strongly believe that all children can learn, all the time, and can learn what I am teaching them. I believe that education is a vital catalyst of change, growth, and equality in society, and is first and foremost the means through which children become valuable members of the community. In this vein, education empowers students and motivates them to accomplish great feats that they never otherwise fathomed possible. It is my role as a classroom teacher to mentor students and guide them towards using their knowledge as a means of advancement, integrating science concepts into their everyday lives.
