On any given morning, walk into my tiny rural school and you'll find students curled up in the hallway reading before the morning bell, occasionally exchanging recommendations with one another or nagging a friend to hurry up and finish a coveted new title. It will not take you long to see that these kids love to read. Through books, my students see themselves - their fears, aspirations, dreams - reflected in the experiences of characters. These readers are living, breathing proof of what C. S. Lewis knew to be true: we read to know that we are not alone. My school sits at the bottom of a slight canyon; we count trailer parks and wheat fields as our neighbors. We are the anchor that holds this town of fewer than 200 people together. For my students, books are not just an emotional tether to the shared human experience, but a literal reminder that they are not alone - and that there is so much waiting for them outside these canyon walls.
