The materials that I have selected are directly related to the standards that are being taught in 4th grade math. Research has said that math manipulatives have been shown to provide a strong foundation for students mastering the following mathematical concepts: number relations, measurement, decimals, number bases, percentages, probability, and statistics (The Access Center, October 1, 2004). In this project, I have added a fractions hands-on kit so my students can see which fractions are equivalent and what it looks like to multiply fractions, add fraction, and subtract fractions. The requested write and wipe fraction number lines will aid students to know where a fraction is on a number line. This will help students determine if a fraction is greater than, less, than, or equal to a comparing fraction. It will also build on their number relations and make a passage to understanding decimals. Place value blocks are foundational to any math concept. It helps illustrate re grouping, the base ten system that math is built around, and develop numeracy skills. This collection of tools for the students can transform how they think about math! Manipulatives help make math concepts accessible to almost all learners, while at the same time offering ample opportunities to challenge students who catch on quickly to the concepts being taught. In this school, most students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. This gift that the community can give will never be outdated like technology. Theses kits can also be shared between classrooms and be integrated with intervention groups that will be set up for students that need more practice within the concepts.
