I am a school psychologist in a low-income, high-poverty elementary school of over 800 students, my students are faced with a wide range of challenges from fluctuating caretakers, to homelessness, to learning and developmental disabilities, to not having adequate food or clothing. With these adversities come along behaviors and needs that interfere with learning. Students as young as 4 walk into our building every day carrying enormous weight on their shoulders that many of us have never had to worry about. How can we expect children to be attentive and ready to learn without taking care of social emotional needs?
