I work at a charter school in East San Jose that specifically recruits students who are between two and five grade levels behind their reading level. Because we accept this unique subset of the population, we can provide lessons and curricula that meet students at their level while simultaneously bringing them to grade level by the time they leave our 5th-8th grade middle school. My school is extremely high-need. 95% of the students at my school are on free or reduced lunch, and most are first generation Americans and would be the first in their family to attend college. Most of the students at my school are English-language learners, and many have auditory and visual processing disabilities. Due to their current needs for language acquisition, many of the readings at their interest are too difficult to access. The average 6th grader in my classroom reads at a third grade level. I also teach 5th-7th grade readers who are within this range as well.
