These flexible seating options will allow for my students to practice making responsible and positive choices while they learn. My class this year prefers to stand or sit on the floor during instruction and even during their specials (music, PE, and art). Since my students are happier when they get to do this, they're more engaged in the lesson, participate more, and their focus increases. By meeting their emotional needs, their desire to make their own choices, and allowing them to have an item that they want, their grades increase and the class needs less behavior management. Thus, I have more time to meet with students to close instructional gaps with less interruption. The Sitting Spots will allow for my students to sit down on the floor instead of in their chair or standing. I plan on allowing students to do this during read to self time and during independent work. The Wobble Chairs will be used for my students that still want to sit up high, but also require that feeling of independence and wiggling that the chairs allow. The chairs will be used anytime throughout the day and it will also allow the students to have an increased sense of responsibility while sitting. Lastly, the chair bands will be provided to my students that love sitting in their chair, but they want to wiggle their feet and this will not distract their neighbors. All of these options will be provided to my students as a choice and give my students a sense of ownership to the item, but they'll also know that they're not toys and have expectations attached. Research shows that more and more children are favoring active learning and these materials will better support the amazing kind of learners that are in my classroom.
