Hello! My name is Perie Reiko Koyama and I am so fortunate to work with sixth, seventh, and eighth graders as a second year teacher. I teach English Language Arts and will be incorporating phonics and reading intervention this year. I serve my students in a self-contained special education setting, meaning that all students in class have an individualized education plan. My students are mostly boys, all African American, and on free-and-reduced lunch. They are anywhere from 3 to 6 years behind grade level in reading and writing, giving us a real sense of urgency. The majority of my students have specific learning disabilities, but I also serve students with other health impairments such as ADHD. My favorite things about working with my kids are their energy, creativity, and sense of humor. I believe in their talents and potential, and cannot wait to see the kind of growth we can achieve together this year.
