We are a public charter high school full of pride and support. Our student body is 97% people of color and 88% receive free or reduced lunch. While only 4% of the parents of our students have graduated from college, almost 97% of our graduates attend college. Truly, our students are some of the most inspiring young people you could ever meet, and they need your help! These kids are given all kinds of excuses and negative encouragement, but they come back to school every day, full of optimism and faith that if they just succeed in school, they can help themselves and their families have a better life. I asked them to reflect on why they want to attend college and I got answers like, "So I can be somebody," or "So I can take care of my family and they won't ever have to worry about money again." I look at my students and see the American dream personified. Through their hard work and dedication, they are going to break a cycle of poverty they had no hand in creating.
