To suit my students' learning style, I've recently up-cycled six tables for my classroom rather than desks, which tend to eliminate the intimacy of learning and collaboration. With these individual chairs, my students can sit around our newly up-cycled classroom tables to learn, plan, create, and discover collaboratively. In this collaborative setting, students have the option to be mobile, changing their seating arrangement for the project and the learning task at hand. Students can form into small groups or large groups to bounce ideas off of one another, share stories and understandings, listen to read alouds, experiences, and perspectives, and simply share our English classroom adventures and lessons. My English students are encouraged to be responsible, respectful, safe, and tolerant learners and these chairs will encourage those expectations as well as an enjoyable manner in which to both learn, understand, create, and discover from and with their peers around our classroom tables.
