My class consist of students who are bright, high spirited, energetic, and very complexed individuals. Therefore, if I truly want to make a difference in my students learning I must seek ways to create an environment that is conducive to welcoming communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Based on research and best practices for children, flexible seating in the classroom offers some immediate benefits in these areas and more. Flexible seating will give my students the power of choice. They have the ability to reposition, realign, and relocate themselves when needed without disturbing others. When my students feel comfortable, they tend to be more calm, engaged, and productive. With flexible seating, they are urged to find comfortable spots throughout the classroom. My students must be able to move, twist, stand, kneel, bounce, and wobble. Wobble cushions, chair balls and chair bands are great at minimizing distractions and providing sensory input while still allowing movement and fidgeting without becoming unfocused or disruptive. Flexible seating encourages a sense of community. My classroom will support and teach students through a shared space philosophy. I will encourage my students to take turns in the various seating options and different locations. I welcome and promote collaboration, the more chances students have to work together, the better they learn. The use of the lap desks will let my students easily work in small groups, and have group discussions, or even just pair up with the adjustable stools. For all these reasons and more, flexible seating is an awesome way to make a difference in my student’s learning.
