As a first year school social worker, these items may seem random but see below for further explanation (I promise, there's a reason)! The use of bibliotherapy is one of my favorite ways to teach children emotional regulation, feeling identification and expression, and prosocial behavior. These books make it easy for children to identify similarities or differences within themselves and work toward their goals. I would love to provide the students with an incentive when they reach their goals! Part of the positive behavior curriculum in my school is to reward positive behavior in different ways (as it's been proven that when positive behavior is rewarded, the child is more likely to exhibit that behavior again). The incentives, such as candy, chips or soda, will be used for this reason. Flexible seating (yoga balls, comfortable stools, foam chairs, bean bags) allows children to learn in their own way as they are able to move about. Not all children learn the same way and this provides flexibility for the students to remain focused and comfortable. This also allows for a "Calm Corner" to be built in my office as a first year school social worker. Students who have become unmanageable or unable to calm down in the classroom can be sent to my "Calm Corner" and choose a fidget toy to help them calm down. Items that will be in the corner include flexible seating, floor lamp, and fidget toys. Office supplies will be needed to continue to providing services to children and stay organized during my hectic school year. Please consider donating to a 25 year-old, first year, school social worker ,who has finally reached her dream of making a difference in children's lives!
