Students have asked for a chess club for two years. COVID stopped this from happening last year. This year we will start with 20 students. Our goal though is to make this a program that will only get bigger and will continue for years! Implementing Capturing Kids' Hearts tools and processes, we strive to create socio-emotional safety conducive to learning, replacing defensiveness with openness and judgment with acceptance and connectedness to the school. Chess will accomplish all of this and so much more! It teaches students critical thinking, planning and foresight, creativity, competition, and improves their math and language skills. We will need tournament chess boards, a chess clock, and puzzle workbooks. Worksheets from the puzzle books will be sent home and we will use chromebooks to watch YouTube videos. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
