Students will be immersed in the culture of Gilead, an ex-American Colony in the not too distant future. Students will read the novel in conjunction with learning about sociological concepts. Students will explore this culture in various ways while directing their own learning to achieve their pathway. This unit will be taught following the Project-Based Learning Model. The purpose of this unit is to allow students to analyze sociological concepts within speculative fiction. The novel of choice also allows reflection of American historical events and the effect that they have on today’s American climate. The “Big Goal” of this project is for students to demonstrate their depth of knowledge using growth over time and multiple pathways, these include various written assignments, benchmarks, an individual research paper, and a multimedia oral presentation. These pathways are aligned to IPS guidelines for graduation pathway and Project-Based Learning Expectations.
