Shinichi Suzuki, Master Music teacher says that a child learns how to sing from his first teacher, his mother. If a mother sings in tune to her child that child will then sing in tune easily. I work in an inner city school in a NJ system teaching music. Rap is the most popular genre in this area. Rarely do they listen to great masters such as Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. They do not attend concerts with their families. They will benefit immensely from listening to music that I will choose for them. I work in a school where I teach music to students ranging from PreK up to Grade 8. The classes consist of an average of 28 students per class. I will create a small listening station for my students. With the listening center, I can rotate the students from one activity to the other. They can go from listening to singing and performing activities thereby making the most of the music classroom time and experience.
