Living close to the boarder, my students deal with a lot of cross culture issues, language difficulties, and family stress. Include being freshmen, and there are a lot of emotions flying around in the classroom. Often, math needs to be pushed aside in order to communicate with the students about present lives. Although, I must say that they are strong, and can quickly bandage themselves from one day to the next. I know that they have the ability to learn the new material, but sometimes it is too mind boggling to learn new concepts with multiple three minute breaks for calculations while trying to figure out how to be a teenager.
