I currently teach in a large urban middle school with a diverse group of students from all walks of life. A majority of our student body live in low-income housing with other students coming from a middle/upper middle class background. About a third of the student population is part of our magnet talent program, a sequential three year program in which students can apply and are accepted to study one of the following disciplines: music (chorus/band/strings), visual art, dance, drama/stagecraft or film studies. This study is incorporated into the school day. Many of the students in the building also have an arts class incorporated into their regular school day for at least one year during their three years at the school. Our music program offers a string orchestra, symphonic band, jazz band, pit orchestra & chorus for our magnet program as well as guitar and keyboard classes for our general music classes.
