I am requesting classroom library books because research is showing that we are killing students love for reading. Yes, my students know what "level" they are reading at. Yes, they meet in small groups and discuss texts that help them grow as a reader. But when it comes to selecting a book from the classroom library for their independent reading, it is close to impossible. But these books don't interest them. This group of students KNOWS what they enjoy reading but we don't have these books in our library. My students get to read books on the computer on Fridays. I have noticed this is the ONE day out of the week that they are engaged in their reading. Some might argue it's because they are using a computer, but it's because they are able to find books they enjoy, books they want to read. The books I am requesting will help my students to discover more graphic novels and spooky stories than the handful we have available in our classroom. The books will help my students to gain a love for reading.
