Many of us remember our first dissection. We can recall the smell of the materials, the feel of gloves, and the surprise of seeing different organ systems. I would love to share this experience with our ninth grade students! The students are taking a rigorous biology course in which they learn about life big and small - from individual cells, all the way to complex ecosystem interactions. The end of the year dissection activity will provide students with an opportunity to bring everything they learned together. The dissection kits we would like to use include earthworms, frogs, and fetal pigs. Each of these organisms represent a different branch along the tree of life, and comparing the organ systems will demonstrate the increasing complexity of different organisms. The nature of science is to investigate and question, to hypothesize and explore. My students are brilliant and curious, and they thrive in environments that allow for hands-on experience. I want my students to enjoy science and recognize their own abilities to observe and gather data, and a hands-on activity like comparative dissections will help meet this goal while teaching students about evolution. "The main idea in all of biology is evolution. To not teach it to our young people is wrong.” - Bill Nye
