My students are struggling readers, and need access to high-interest, low-readability (hi-lo) texts to practice their reading strategies. They fall into a routine of reading what their peers are reading, to feel like they fit in. However, these books are often too challenging, and don't help them grow as readers. Reading hi-lo books gives students a sense of accomplishment, because they can finish a whole book and understand what it's about. The stories are interesting, and the language is easier to understand. This sense of accomplishment is one of the first steps in building reading motivation. Students who are motivated to read will read more. And students who read more will grow as learners and as people.
