My students face these challenges every single moment of their lives. I serve 6, soon to be 7, beautiful children with special needs. My students have all been diagnosed with severe mental retardation and many face multiple disabilities, a few have been diagnosed with autism. All of them are non-verbal and come from families struggling with economic hardship. Our special day class is nestled in the heart of a general education campus, and as a class we strive to fit in with the rest of our community. Day in and day out my assistants and I make every effort to help them communicate and connect with the rest of the students and school personnel. We have a great school and a caring, supportive community but…what happens when they leave our school? The main idea behind my curriculum is to develop basic life skills and language development. With the support of donorschoose.org I hope to be able to raise the funds necessary to supply my classroom with the elements needed to help us in this endeavor. I know that we can count on technology to teach my students to talk. Please help me help my students!
