I teach 2nd grade in one of the most challenging schools in Washington, D.C. My students are 99% African American, and most all qualify for free or reduced lunch. Unlike many DC schools, my school still remains a "neighborhood" school - some of our students live so close that my colleagues walk them home. My students scored in the 20-30% proficiency range in the 2010 DC-CAS, and need as much extra support as possible.
