My students' backgrounds are Mexican, Honduran, Salvadoran, and Panamanian. Their native language is Spanish and are learning English as a second language. I teach at the middle school grades 5-8, so I have two Transitional Bilingual classes with a total of 28 students. In one class I have 16 5th and 6th graders, and in the other I have 12 7th and 8th graders. I also provide additional ELL support the rest of my school day. Most, if not all, of my students come from low-income homes in which families can barely pay for essential school supplies, much less can they afford to purchase books for their children to read at home. My students truly enjoy reading and would very much like to have quality books available to take home and read. Our community has a public library, but most of my students' parents work long hours and do not have time to take them to the library. I have a small library in my classroom and they have exhausted all of their options for the readers workshop.
