My students have seen other classes around school tracking their fitness with all sorts of activity trackers and wanted to literally get in on the action. They suggested we all get our own trackers and challenge other classes to monthly goals and friendly competition. The beauty of using fitness trackers at school is that they are not solely limited to our 30 minutes of teacher directed PE--we will use the data in math, science and health. With at least 30 minutes of formal physical activity daily (P.E. and teacher directed P.E.), as well as intermittent bursts of physical activity (brain breaks, campus walks, yoga stretches, travel to campus greenhouse), our class will get 60 minutes of physical activity every day. 30 minutes of P.E. + 30 minutes of classroom movement equals 60 healthy minutes of physical activity for my 3rd graders.
