My 9th grade English students from the south side of Chicago need classroom essentials, writing materials and books with narratives they can relate to. They will create their own narratives, essays, poems, etc in the composition notebooks. We will read Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give. The classroom can be exciting. I want students to love learning and covet creativity. I plan to stimulate academic engagement through a justice oriented, holistic approach to teaching and a restorative justice approach to behavior management. Teaching is not just about providing students with academic knowledge but knowledge centered in how to live in the world. It is about providing a space for students to be individuals with complex lives and experiences so that they can see themselves as changemakers and part of a supportive learning community.
