Many young students currently come to school without having fully developed the muscles or attention needed for sitting in traditional metal classroom chairs or just on a rug. Whether this is due to less unstructured outdoor play, more time spent using technology, a learning disability, or a trauma history, these students need choices that will help them channel their energy into lessons and classroom tasks. These additional flexible seating options will foster a sense of responsibility and ownership in my students. Students are almost always more engaged when they are able to make decisions that impact their learning. Through modeling and practice, they will learn how to choose the seating option that works best for them and how to use it responsibly in different contexts throughout the day. Right now, my students have two seating options in our classroom - metal chairs or rugs. Through the addition of these floor seats and wobble stools, I will be able to give them alternative comfortable options to choose when they are doing individual or group work. They might also use one of these seats during independent reading time. Some students who need more support sitting for extended periods of time may use these floor seats and wobble stools during whole group lessons as well. I would like to put the beanbag chair in our classroom’s Calm Space, offering an extra comfortable option for students who need to use their mindful strategies when they feel angry or sad.
