This year, 2018-2019, I am excited to return as my school's first and second grade Special Education Teacher! It is my goal to provide my students with the resources they need to be successful throughout all classroom environments. I support my students in an inclusive environment. I am in the general education classroom as well as pull groups for specially designed instruction to meet their specific needs in not only reading, writing, math, but in social-emotional learning and impulse control. My students need resources that can give them opportunities to move and receive or reduce sensory input without distracting themselves or others from their education! Tools such as wobble cushions, balance balls, stools, noise cancelling headphones, and small fidget allow the students to get the sensory input/output they need. In turn, the students have better focus and negative, impulsive, and distracting behaviors are reduced. Additional items such as timers provide structure and set boundaries for the items. The students will first learn how and when to use the seating options and small fidgets as well as learn to use them as a learning tool, opposed to a "toy". In addition to supporting sensory needs, my students need specially designed instruction to support their social and emotional learning needs. Resources such as books on character education, emotions, mindfulness, communication, team building activities, and games for kids with sensory needs are resources I will utilize to teach and draw lessons from. When my students feel supported and learn to successfully manage their impulses and emotions they are more likely to succeed academically. I need to give my students the tools and resources they need to be successful not only in first and second grade, but through life!
