A project I began this year (because of an e-mail my literacy coach forwarded) is called Classroom Book a Day (CBAD). The purpose behind this project is to infuse our each day with text that causes us to wonder, question, laugh, investigate, want to know more, etc. Classroom Book a Day is based around reading picture books involving a variety of genres, authors, topics, cultures and formats. Both fiction and nonfiction are meant to be used and enjoyed. The few days we have missed CBAD students have expressed their displeasure - they WANT me to read! I love this! Each of the pictures books I am asking you to help us obtain reach out to my students in a variety of ways. For example, "I Walk With Vanessa" speaks to the challenges of standing up for what is right in the face of bullying. Yet, one child does just that. This book will pair beautifully with our Olweus No Bullying Program -- our school does not tolerate bullying and we seek as many opportunities as possible to inform our students and provide them with the necessary tools to be a supportive peer instead of a silent bystander. Another example, "Me, Myselfie, & I" explores the pros and cons to technology, specifically a smart phone. In our children's era where technology has become #1 in their lives, this book provides the much needed perspective that life can be missed because we are too consumed by our the grip of technology. Further, "Balloons Over Broadway" brings us history about the person who began the use of the balloons for the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Texts like this broaden students reading lives by offering information they otherwise would not have gleaned on their own. Each text is purposeful and will enrich our lives!
