These motivating middle school books (including Refugee, Home of the Brave, and more) will be the foundation for building cultural awareness in my 6th grade classroom this year. Living in a small suburban farming area, my students are often unaware of the diversity surrounding them in the world. With these new books, my students will be able to build more cultural awareness, and also connect these stories to current struggles happening around them in our world today. Not only will these books teach them of cultures in countries like Cuba, Germany, Syria, Mexico, and Africa; they will also relate to the struggles of the main characters trying to fit into a society where they are not accepted. Teenagers are constantly fighting this battle to fit in. Through this book club, my students will enjoy the opportunity to choose from the four different book choices and converse with their classmates about other cultures. I'm most excited to hear the students come together to connect the similar themed novels to their own lives. As a culminating project, my 6th graders will connect with another class in another state or country as we participate in the Global Read Aloud and read together a new culturally diverse book on rights of girls in Pakistan. The foundation will be laid for our entire school year in cultural awareness and the beginning of spreading kindness to others.
