As a third grade math teacher, I try to differentiate my instruction as much as I possibly can. These flexible seating additions will allow my students to choose a comfortable spot for center groups based on their individual needs that day. I'm hoping to give my students enough options that they will have several choices in seating, which they are able to pick on their own, depending on their preference and level of comfort or movement needed that day. Flexible seating allows students to lean, lay, rock, wobble, stand, or sit, and research shows that this physical component to the classroom is linked to better health, higher academic performance, and improved behavior. My hope is that with the addition of beanbag chairs, Hokki Stools, Go Anywhere chairs, and lap desks, in addition to the materials that I already have in my classroom, I can provide a new opportunity for my students to have a bit of control over their learning environment, and improve their overall academic achievement.
