I am one of two special education teachers in our grade level at our primary school. Our classroom is a cross-category classroom, which means that all special education students in the second grade come to our classroom for their minutes. Each year, I have found that there are more students who have Social Skills/Behavioral needs. I have a lot of materials to meet the academic needs of my students. I do not have sufficient materials to meet the needs of my students with Social Skills and Behavioral needs. These students need instruction in all parts of social skills and character education. They need, not only to hear and role play, but to also put what they have learned to use through the games. Some of these students simply have not learned these social conventions at home. Some KNOW what it is that they are supposed to do, but in moments (long and short) of anger, do not use what they have learned. These students need specific instruction in areas that they are deficit.
