I teach eleventh grade English in a school of passionate, hopeful, energetic students. Some of them enjoy reading, and connect with literature naturally. However, many others struggle to engage with books. It's interesting that although 69% of the students at my school are below poverty level, (as measured by free/reduced lunch stats) we have an 74% four year graduation rate and high college placement. In general, students are invested in their futures and eager to learn. The school has 99% African American students. Although they have numerous life experiences, skills, talents, and socio-economic backgrounds, racial and ethnic diversity is limited.
