One of our school district's main goals is to educate Montpelier's students in the area of Sustainability. In 4th grade, we learn all about Vermont history, agriculture, industry and environment. I do a comprehensive unit on Resource Conservation - I was the recipient of the Vermont Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence! My students are in charge of our school's recycling and composting and I take pride in sending kids to the middle school with a "green" mentality. Since we learn about local foods and farming, I also like to incorporate a unit on Earth Science, soil/water erosion and pollution. We live in such a gorgeous state and many of our students still have no idea what our land is comprised of - our land/water science kits are a decade old and kids NEED to get their hands dirty (literally) to learn about our environment. We need new Earth Science materials!
