I have a Carpe Librum (Seize the Book) program in place in my classroom. Students have daily silent reading time. They can read whatever they choose, but I monitor what they read and suggest increasingly complex texts. Students keep track of progress on Goodreads and complete a quarterly Book Ladder assignment to keep track of their reading. I often talk about how much I love books that I am reading, and get book recommendations from my students. It's vital to have a classroom library for this process. There are always several students who don't know what to read or who think they don't like to read. It can be life changing to hand these students an amazing, high-interest book and tell them why they'll love it. Unfortunately, I have a very limited number of high-interest books in my classroom at the moment. I have compiled the list below based on my students' suggestions, as well as my own research on worthwhile high-interest literature for Young Adults. Books are magic. Unread books are useless, however. Our young people need opportunities to find connections to other times, other people, and other places through words. They can find hope. They can heal. Laugh. Cry. Discover. I don't want Facebook to be the only place they turn to find humor or comfort. I want them to discover the feeling of stealing every moment they have to read, yet not ever wanting the book to end. Students will discover magic through this project. Carpe Librum!
