Books can help us understand the people in the world around us and can create empathy for those people. My students need books to not only encourage reading and critical thinking, but to help them see that people have the same needs and aspirations, no matter their backgrounds. I teach in a small rural community where diversity is improving, but is still lacking somewhat. I have chosen a variety of popular YA novels to help students see characters just like them in situations My school does not have extra funds for individual classroom libraries and classroom reading projects. I would love to give my students, books for independent reading projects, literature circles, and for fun pastime reading.
