Fourth graders are growing bigger with every passing day! The desks they are assigned limit their ability to spread out if needed. Some of my students are taller than I am, and need a little extra space. I am looking to transform my classroom by first getting rid of desks and replacing them with tables, then adding flexible seating options. Tables not only add the extra space desired, it will also make our classroom more inviting and encourages cooperative learning. Research shows that cooperative learning improves achievement. "A study from the National Training Laboratories in 2000 found that only about 5 percent of the information delivered through lecture was retained. Compare that with retention rates at 50 percent for discussion group and 70 percent for practice by doing." I try to make my classroom as comfortable and inviting as possible, and with a table instead of desks, I am guaranteed to make that dream a reality! "Environments that are intimidating or uninviting will influence the depth of learning that can take place." After I replace desks with tables, I intend to provide flexible seating options for my students to feel even more at home. When a classroom is inviting and comfortable students are more likely to want to come to school each day!
